THE BEGINNINGS...
I thought I would start this site by providing a little background on the City of Hull. I was born and bred in East Yorkshire and live within 10 miles of the City of Hull, a large city of approx 225,000 people and located where the River Hull meets the Tidal Estuary called the Humber. The Humber Estuary seperates the Counties of Yorkshire and North Linconshire and in 1980 a huge bridge was opened to join the North and the South bank, a bridge that was for a long period the largest single span suspension bridge in the world.
Hulls history revolves almost entirely around the Fishing Industry and was once one of the largest fishing ports in Europe but sadly following the 'Cod Wars' with Iceland in the 1970's and the decline of the fishing industry Hull has suffered a steady demise. This has arguably been brought about by a combination of membership of the EEC and poor management of fish stocks, but that is another story. Hulls maritime links now revolve around the large P&O Ferry Port that takes passengers and freight to the continent.
In recent years Hull has begun to shed its self-image of a city in decline and has attracted a number of large investments and a number of development works are currently changing the landscape of the City. The BBC has made a huge investment in the city centre and the 'Deep' Aquarium has recently welcomed its millionth visitor in not a lot over its first year. Other large investments include Hulls fantastic new 40 Million pound super-stadium, the redevopment of its ferensway shopping area and the opening of Hulls Museum Quarter.
If you have never visited Hull then you could be surprised by whats on offer, and if you have a Sunday to spare you will see the city and its architecture at its uncrowded best.
